b. Samuel Taylor Coleridge (1772)
Author of several well-known, if not often read poems. Everyone has heard of The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, right?
But I’ll bet Iron Maiden fans at least know a little, since the band wrote one of their long, epic, album-closing songs based on the poem. Even lifted a few lines, which is rare in the rock world.
Coleridge also coined a few words. Not as many as Shakespeare, but among the many are: psychosomatic, intensify and clerisy.
